Reflective Narrative
This course used content regarding the Japanese population and geography to promote learning the Japanese language. Reading comprehension was a particular focus. As such, I felt that this course helped improve my interpretive Japanese language ability quite a lot. I also gained experience in class of being put on the spot to use my presentational and interpersonal language abilities. Though most of the work was online or in-class, we completed several partnered presentations about various topics to contribute to our learning.
The tests for this course were frankly kind of awful four to six hour long ordeals; the only plus side being I could take them at home. I did, however, learn that I could complete written tests in Japanese that lasted four to six hours. Also, since I consistently did well on these tests, my confidence in my Japanese ability rose. I only wish they had been split in half, so we could take one half at one time and the other half at a different time.
In the future, I'd like to continue to build on my Japanese writing ability and also explore more Japanese online news sources. We were exposed to several different news sources during the class that I found interesting, so I hope to get my Japanese ability up to the point where I can more comfortably read online news. I intend to start with NHK News Web Easy.
Really, the learning we did in this course built upon all my previously language courses and my study abroad experience.
